Taking a (Summer) break

Friday, 31 August 2018

I have missed several posts here on the blog, and hadn't been active at all on any social media, whether it is my Instagram or Tumblr account. I was away for a week, in Barcelona and on the Costa Brava, for a little Summer get away with my boyfriend. It was lovely and wonderful, I enjoyed every instant of it, and will - don't worry - write a post all about it as soon as possible. Yet during this relaxing time, I did not want to worry a minute about my blog, my activity on social media, or if I was losing or gaining readers and followers. I took a break. And it felt wonderful. Even though this blog is not my full-time job, it is a project I am deeply in love with, my little baby in a way, something I am intensely proud of and willing to make grow and bloom. However, sometimes you need to take a step back, to remember why you started, where you want to go, and what makes you happy. This week I got the answer to all of those questions, and now that I got them, I know what to do. I am now back, and happier than ever for my blog and I. Our love story is still going on and is doing great! This is, I hope, just the start to a bigger adventure.

Reflexion on fashion: uniqueness and individuality

Monday, 20 August 2018

A week ago, I was sat on a rooftop, watching the fireworks in Geneva. It was a nice evening, and I was there with my boyfriend and a couple of his friends. At some point, I started chatting with one of them that I already met several times, whom I knew was into fashion, and naturally, the conversation went towards this topic. His dream is to own his own fashion company, where every piece will be unique, each of them hand painted with one of his orignal design. I loved the idea right away, and totally met his thoughts on this specific topic: uniqueness. We are part of generation where everybody looks the same, dresses the same, follows the same trends. Fast fashion is a real disaster, both for our own personalities, but also for our environment. That is why his idea seduced me. However, as beautiful as it was, at some point it had to meet reality.
I always wanted to wear unique pieces, to own a personal style that nobody else had, to find that one piece that will make me different. Thrift shops are heaven for people craving uniqueness, but it is not always that easy. I still got tempted by high street brands, as showed my latest blogpost, but I am not ashamed of it. I think that you need to find a balance. You can follow the trend, if you want to stay in, and if you are a fashion blogger above all, it can be real hard to go against the stream. I like thrift shops, I like to spend a little more money in a rather unique bag or garment, in a fragrance that costs an arm but is too niche to be smelled on every woman you cross path with. We all want to be unique, but it can be hard when we are stuck in a society such as ours. As a student, short on money almost every month, I can't afford unique pieces, so I still shop at Zara or ASOS, yet choosing wisely every piece, thinking "will this last for years in my wardrobe and does it really match my style?". If the answer is yes, I buy it, making sure before that I don't own something similar already. If I am not a hundred percent sure, I leave it on the shelf. However, time to time, I invest in an expensive piece, that I haven't seen anybody - or at least everybody - wearing.
My conversation on that roof that night made me think. I wish I could only buy from independent stores, young designers willing to grow, I wish I could afford an entire unique wardrobe. Yet I can't. But little by little, I purchase those unique pieces, and I mix them with my high street curated founds, I create a wardrobe and a style that is mine only. Unique, even if still anchored in the high street names.

Summer Wishlist

Wednesday, 15 August 2018

Summer is still going strong, and for a reason I don't really get, I am at the minute really into shopping. So today I have decided to share with you some of my latest founds from high street brands. Affordable clothes, real basics, yet still needed in our wardrobe when we are students. I am always willing to turn myself towards small independent brands, unique ones, however, this is still a dream for me. Too expensive, not always my style, I still have to rely on ASOS, Mango or Zara to update my wardrobe. So here is a curated selection of my Summer essentials.

A cute little Sumer black dress for an August night out, or a stroll along the sea after a hot day in the sun...

Sometimes it gets a little bit chilly in the evenings, then you will need a cord denim jacket, but life is better in pink.

You cannot have too many sun dresses during this season, but a midi one is always a good choice, especially when it is in a terra cotta shade, and a polka dots pattern.

Can you have too many bags? You cannot. And you need this bucket one.

Slides, slides, always more slides. You got to wear them while the sun is still out!

A rainy day during a hot Summer season is always welcome, and this sweater will be your perfect ally for those days.

Is buying another embroidered tee-shirt a good idea? It always is.

One last shopping for the season, yet a curated and sustainable one, made of pieces that will stay into my wardrobe for many more Summer seasons.

Travel Diary: Locarno & Ascona

Saturday, 11 August 2018

In the middle of July, my mother and I went away for a few days in Italian Switzerland. We are used to travel further away normally, but this time, we were a little bit last minute and decided to stay within Switzerland, which, even if it is such a small country, has so much to offer. Italian Switzerland was a good choice, as none of us has ever been there, and Locarno and Ascona looked like the perfect little towns for a chilled summer holiday, relaxing but still full of discoveries. Today, I am going to share with you our travel diary, what we did, what to see in those places, and why it is such a good destination, even though it is rather confidential.

Day 1

We left our place early in the morning, on Monday 16th July. We travel by car, for it was not tat far from our home, and it was the easiest way to move while we will be there. But also, to travel by car had the advantage to make of the journey an experience in itself. While driving, we crossed amazing landscape, and had the opportunity to go over the Simplon, a Swiss mountain. The road was pretty scary for somebody like me who suffers of vertigo, but it was definitely worth forgetting about my fears. The view was incredibly beautiful, and to be able to see from above is always a nice experience. We drove for quite a while, and discovered beautiful view, before finally arriving in Locarno. This was however not our first stop, before that we headed to the location of our Air B'N'B, in a small village called Brione Sopra Minusio. This tiny village, hung up the mountain, was offering the beast view over the lake and city. We could not have dreamt for a better landscape, and the flat we stayed in could not have been more typical. It was located right in the center of the village, behind the church, in the cutest house. A lovely place to relax. But not much time for that, because we right away headed back to Locarno for our first visit!
That first day, nothing particular was planed. We just wandered around town, trying to see as much as possible, getting lost in its small streets, stumbling upon cute shops and beautiful houses, hidden in mesmerizing and flourishing gardens. We also took a long walk along the lake, discovering this landscape, a different one that along the Leman Lake. As I always say, to get lost and wander around is always the best way to discover a new place.

Day 2

For our second day in Ticino, we left Locarno, where we have spent half of the day before, and headed to the town next door, Ascona. To be honest, I think I loved this town even more than Locarno. It is just such a cute place, a real typical Swiss Italian town, along the lake. It perfectly fits the image we got when imagining an Italian fishermen's village, with its colorful houses facing the lake, its local market where only local products are sold, and obviously its boats and local shops, selling Swiss Italian traditional pastries and soaps. I fell in love with Ascona, and enjoyed strolling around its small streets, walking along the lake, between the blue waters and the yellow, pink, blue or green houses.
However, on that day we did not limit ourselves to a walk around town, we took a boat to Isole Brissago, an adorable little island, reachable by boat in 10 minutes. On that island, we visited a rather exotic botanical garden, gathering plants from Asia, Australia, and obviously local ones. But this island is blessed with a Mediterranean climate, and we felt like we were way further than Ascona. It was a really enjoyable visit, a beautiful island that we loved to discover, yet it was a real battle, under the 40°C temperature and 3p.m sun, and when we went back to Ascona, we needed a little refreshment. So headed to the beach. Ascona's beach is just the best in this area. It is a sandy one, the water is clear and rather hot - 24°C for a lake is pretty good - and really agreeable with its trees and clean beach. We stayed there for the end of the day and evening, enjoying a dip in the Lake Major and a read on our beach towels. A day perfectly balancing exploring and relaxing.

Day 3

Four days is pretty short for a holiday, but when visiting such an area, pretty small, it is the perfect amount of time. For that third day we decided to stay in Locarno add a little bit of culture to our trip, and took the funicular to Madonna del Sasso, a sanctuary hung in the mountains above Locarno, dominating the whole lake. This little excursion was beautiful. Even with I was paralyzed by my fear of heights, I battled it as much as I could to be able to see this architectural achievement. It is not only remarkable because hung on the mountains, but also for how rich and luxurious the inside of the sanctuary is. Gold and paintings everywhere, a decor that spread a peculiar atmosphere, making me feel how special this place was. A must see.
The second excursion we had planed on that day was the Castelo Visconteo, a medieval castel hosting the archeology museum. On such a hot day it was nice visiting a castle, made of stones keeping us cool. An enjoyable cultural stop!
But as soon as we left the castle, it was too hot again, so we took the road to Ascona and went back to the same beach. Another relaxing evening before coming back to the flat, strolling around the village and taking in all the view, and finally enjoying a pizza before falling asleep.

Day 4

Our last day could not be too full, since we had to take the road to go back home. But even though we still wanted to leave early, we had planed an outdoor visit, a little bit further out in the mountain, the Valle Verzasca. We could not miss this natural treasure, a pearl of the Ticino region.  So we took another sinuous and scary road, and arrived to this amazing spot, where the water was crystal clear, rolling in-between massive stones, in the shade of majestic trees. It was a nice stop, a peaceful moment when we could just enjoy mountain's fresh air, and simply the beauty of nature. As sacred as Madonna del Sasso, even.
The rest of the day was spent on another beach, making the most of the Lake Major before we had to leave. The road back home was not the same as the one we took to come, and we had the opportunity to see Luzern and Interlaken, two other beautiful Swiss towns, once we had existed the impressive Mount Gothard's tunnel. A nice journey going back home, that made it a little less sad.
Four days was a short time, but those holidays were very relaxing and different from our place. You see, sometimes the perfect holiday is just next door.

Protect your skin, and your planet: Avène Sun protection

Wednesday, 8 August 2018

Beauty tends to make us selfish people. We care about our skin, we care about the quality of the product we put on our faces and bodies, but we tend to forget about the impact we have on our environment, by being so self centered. With sun protection, it tends to be even worse. We burry ourselves under tones of sunscreen, afraid to damage our skin, and then we take a dip in the sea, in the ocean, in the lake, and leave a massive amount of product in the water. More than poisoning living animals, it does leave a coat of sunscreen on the surface of the water, and keeps the sun rays from going under, then killing the plancton and see weeds which are needing the sun rays to survive. This is only the start, because when the plancton dies, the fishes don't have anything left to eat, etc.., and by bathing with product on our skin, we kill the world we are living in.
That is why nowadays it is very important to choose our products wisely, especially when they have such a direct contact with nature. This Summer, I choose the brand Avène to protect my skin, and also to protect my environment. The formula they have developed is not only amazing for your skin - it moisturizes, protects you amazingly and is perfect for sensitive skins - but it is also a revolutionary one that won't impact the environment as much as others do. The way it has been developed has made possible for it to not stay at the surface of the water when leaving our bodies, and to stick to the skin as much as possible. I love this initiative, and how respectful such a dangerous product has become. Avène has made a major step, and I highly recommend to purchase this range of sun protection. I am not sponsored to write this post, I just truly believe in this range and in our power to make a change by simply choosing a bit more wisely! Protect yourself, but don't forget to protect the world we are living in.

What's in my beach bag

Sunday, 5 August 2018

I am lucky enough to live by the Lake Leman, and even though it is not the sea, nor an ocean, it is still a beautiful place to take a dip. Hence why, every summer, I go to the lake as much as I can. It is cold, that is true, but I won't change this beautiful view that I got when swimming in those chilly waters for anything. Every time I can, I grab my beach basket and go for a swim, or simply for a read on the rocky beach, laid down in the shade of a tree. That is why my beach bag is always ready. Today I have decided to share with you what I bring to the beach, my essentials, the things I could not stand the heat or the sun without.

First thing first, you always need a towel, to lay down comfortably and dry your wet body. However, it is always such a pain to carry those heavy beach towels, and it becomes even worse when you leave the beach, totally exhausted, and your towel is still wet, a hundred times heavier. That is why, this year, I chose to buy a fouta, a traditional Moroccan piece. It is light and easy, dries quickly, and is still comfy and soft. A new essential that will come with me to Barcelona in two weeks!

I always try to take with me as few things as I can, however, some items cannot leave my bag. The first one is my sunscreen. Since the start of the Summer, I am trying out different formulas from French pharmacy brands, but yesterday when going shopping at the drugstore I spied with my little eye a symbol that a never saw before, representing a fish and coral. It was printed on the tube of a sunscreen, and I grabbed it to learn more about this sign. It actually was a proof that this specific sunscreen has been created in a way that won't impact the ocean and marin life. As we know, sunscreen are a real damage for the aquatic flora and fauna, and even though I try to put sunscreen only after my swim, I know there is always some remaining from earlier. So I decided to buy this Avène sun protection. I will write a full article about this sun products range next week, so stay tuned for a full description and review.

As I explained in a recent post, I also want to protect my hair when I am going to the beach, and for that, I have one ally that never leaves my beach bag: my Gisou heat protecting spray. This works wonders, and my hair, even after few hours in the sun, is still moisturized and does not show any sign of dryness or weakness. I spray it every few hours, and I can definitely witness the results.

Something you got to learn about me is that when at the beach, for a reason that I don't understand, I always get super hungry. I could definitely be unhealthy and bring with me sugary cookies that I am a sucker for, yet recently I took the habit to bring a fruit, whether a peach or an apricot. It fills up my belly, but also puts me in a serious Call me by your name mood...
Water is another massive essential. I cannot imagine a moment at the beach without my much needed obviously healthy drink.

Because I am not spending all of my time in the lake, and because the beach is not only about water, I never forget to bring my novel of the moment with me. At the minute I am still reading Tolstoï's Anna Karenina. I didn't get much time to read, so this 1025 pages piece takes me some time, but my beach moments help me go through it really easily! A real essential for me. And stay tuned for a soon to come book review of this incredible masterpiece!

Other essentials are for sure my beach straw hat, and my sunglasses, that I already mentioned and put links to in this article! But no matter what's in my beach bag, or if you wear sunscreen and a hat, remember that the sun should be avoided between 10am and 4pm! Enjoy, but stay safe!

July Favorite... Pop and Suki Bags

Wednesday, 1 August 2018

Fashion can be very general and mainstream, and I must say that I am one of those persons who does follow the trends. But sometimes, it can be annoying to have nothing personal, to just look like everybody else. That is why it is always lovely to encounter brands which are all about personalization. And Pop & Suki is one of them, especially with their adorable Camera Bag. Their cute-as-hell bags are not only lovely and stylish, they can also be marked with the word or name of your choice. Obviously, many girls choose to write their own names, but you have all the possibilities in the world! I tell you about the Camera Bag because you can personalize it, but all the items of the brand are just adorable and too cute not to buy. Obviously, you cannot fit much in their bags, however, who cares when they are at the same time cute, stylish, and above all, a real it-bag? The plus of that brand is the price. It is not high street nor luxury, but it has the quality of the second one, and is for sure affordable. Pop & Suki is definitely a brand to follow. The two designers don't have many models out yet, but I also enjoy this fact. It is still a small company, which cares about quality and is full of creativity. This favorite of the month will definitely stay with the years if all of their accessories continue to be so wonderful. That looks like the start of a long romance..!
